Solution to 1996 Problem 91


The Clausius statement of the second law of thermodynamics states that (see Giancoli page 526) ``No device is possible whose sole effect is to transfer heat from one system at one temperature into a second system at a higher temperature." If the 600 \mbox{ K} oven could be used to heat the sample to 900 \mbox{ K}, then this would clearly violate the Clausius statement of the second law of thermodynamics. Therefore, answer (E) is correct.
